چکیده

The tunneling of surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) across an interruption in the metallic film supporting them is numerically investigated in details. Both non-symmetrical and symmetrical geometries are considered. A very high tunneling efficiency is calculated for the long-range surface plasmon in the symmetrical geometry, with an amplitude transmission as high as 80% over a 5 microm gap for a 40 nm thick gold film illuminated at lambda= 785 nm. The transmission is somewhat lower in the non-symmetrical geometry. The coupling between the different SPP modes (radiative and non-radiative) in that geometry is also investigated in detail. This coupling depends periodically upon the length of the gap. Overall, the results indicate that SPPs are not very sensitive to technological imperfections and can survive large waveguide interruptions.

Resonant photon tunneling via surface plasmon polaritons through one-dimensional metal-dielectric metamaterials.

We report resonant photon tunneling (RPT) through one-dimensional metamaterials consisting of alternating layers of metal and dielectric. RPT via a surface plasmon polariton state permits evanescent light waves with large wavenumbers to be conveyed through the metamaterial. This is the mechanism for sub-wavelength imaging recently demonstrated with a super-lens. Furthermore, we find that the RP...

Optical Tunneling Effect of Surface Plasmon Polaritons: A Simulation Study Using Particles Method

The phenomenon of resonant tunneling through thin metal films with periodic narrow grooves is attributed to excitation of surface plasmon (SP) via the periodic structure coupler at the metal surface. In this paper, we will use the particle-in-cell (PIC) plasma simulation method to study the SP-mediated optical tunneling. The PIC method is a time-domain scheme to calculate self-consistently the ...

A Nano-scale Fabry-perot Interferometer Using Channel Plasmon-polaritons in Triangular Metallic Grooves

In this letter, we demonstrate the possibility of an effective nano-scale FabryPerot interferometer in a sub-wavelength plasmonic waveguide in the form of a triangular groove on a metal surface, guiding channel plasmon-polaritons (CPPs). The resonant cavity is formed by two semitransparent metal membranes (mirrors) placed into the groove. Effective filtering effect of the cavity is demonstrated...

Scattering of terahertz radiation on a graphene-based nano-antenna

Scattering of the terahertz radiation on a graphene-based nano-antenna is considered. Different electromagnetic models of graphene are discussed and applied to calculate extinction, scattering and absorption cross sections of the nanoantenna. Scattering resonances in the terahertz band are identified as longitudinal Fabry-Perot resonances of surface plasmon polaritons supported by the graphene ...

Wide-angle Spectrally Selective Perfect Absorber by Utilizing Dispersionless Tamm Plasmon Polaritons

We theoretically investigate wide-angle spectrally selective absorber by utilizing dispersionless Tamm plasmon polaritons (TPPs) under TM polarization. TPPs are resonant tunneling effects occurring on the interface between one-dimensional photonic crystals (1DPCs) and metal slab, and their dispersion properties are essentially determined by that of 1DPCs. Our investigations show that dispersion...
